While older adults may expect their voices to become somewhat weaker as they age, there are other, non-age-related causes of hoarseness and other voice problems. The fact is that the general loss of muscle mass and tissue thinning that is associated with aging also extends to the throat and larynx (or voice box). As a result, the instrument responsible for projecting the sounds of our voices may become weaker. There are also a number of medical conditions that can lead to voice problems, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can cause hoarseness, and Parkinson’s disease, which can weaken the voice. In addition, medications such as diuretics, anti-anxiety drugs, and anti-depressants can cause voice problems.
