Every year staff holds a fair for our residents and family. We have popcorn, cotton candy, funnel cake, and lemonade from Dietary. As well as games with prizes and a photo booth from the Therapy department. Staff also holds a baking contest where some of our residents are the judges.
Pie Contest at Mahoning Valley Fair
The Staff also holds a pie eating contest…watch the videos to see what happens at the end. We think that you’ll like it.
Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has a gardening club. The club works with Master Gardeners from Penn State Extension, which came today and assisted some of the residents in digging up the potatoes and sweet potatoes that were grown here in the facility.
They also brought in leaves and had the residents trace them with fall colors onto paper. Our Master Gardeners come in monthly sharing their love for gardening and expertise with our residents. This year tomatoes, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, cucumbers, and a variety of herbs were planted.
Every month their activity varies from making flower arrangements in vases, making crafts out of cords, pumpkin activities, planting seeds and taking care of gardens throughout the season. It nice to see our Garden Club growing since the Master Gardeners have been coming to the facility.

Independence Day at Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Everyone remembers the 4th of July with fond memories. The day gathered with friends and family enjoying Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Ice Cream by day. Then as the sun begins to set everyone stares with smiles to the skies and the oncoming fireworks to celebrate America.
The residents of Mahoning Valley Nursing And Rehabilitation Center are no exception to this tradition gathered together with family, friends, and the kind staff of MVNRC the residents celebrate the 4th of July much in the same way.
For the celebration staff dressed up in their Red, White, and Blue to bring some Independence Day cheer to our residents. Patriotic music was playing and flowered Lei were handed out to all residents and their families. Many clapped and sang along to the music. Some residents even joined in the parade. Below are a few pictures to enjoy.
Chopped returns for its second year with some twists.
Rules are as follows:
Contestants MUST use all ingredients in a basket and AT LEAST 1 ingredient from the pantry (no limit to how many they use). Teams will be judged on 3 categories and a score from 1-10 with 10 being the best for each category. Categories are Presentation, Taste, and Proper Utilization of Ingredients.
Bingo is one of the HOT activities here at MVNRC…it is held weekly along with either Penny Bingo or Adapted Bingo every other week. Penny Bingo is held the same way, just using pennies to bid and win. (Pennies provided) Adapted bingo is the same as regular bingo but geared to our residents that may need that extra help and goes at a slower speed, allowing each resident the opportunity to find and cover the number.
We can not thank our Bingo Volunteers enough for all that they do. Assist residents playing, transport, call the winners, and clean up. We have a great volunteer team to help make our Bingos flow perfectly.
If you are ever visiting during Bingo time, you may hear our residents “jokingly” scolding our caller for not picking the correct numbers, to “shake up the balls” and to get them out of the corners of a round basket, as well as hearing the many phrases she has come up with for some numbers. Our residents even have them memorized and will say them along with her.
If you really want to see something, that’s wonderful. Then you need to see all the smiles and hear the excitement when someone yells “Bingo!”

Sunday, March 25th, the Mahoning Valley Nursing Home, and Rehab Center held a Spring Fling-Easter Fun day for friends and family of residents and staff. The Easter Bunny made his appearance for pictures with young and old. We also had stations of painting birdhouses, dying Easter eggs, and coloring Easter/Spring coloring sheets. We were grateful to have homemade chocolates for sale from The Candyman-“The Bailey’s”. A raffle was also held with a basket donated by The Baileys and won by resident I. Yaconbenas. The weather tried to put a damper on our egg hunt but we didn’t let it and found a new way to get the children their eggs. 2 prize Golden eggs were found and claimed for a prize. Dietary made cupcakes and a Bunny cake for all to enjoy. A wonderful time was had by all that attended. A big “Thank you” to all who helped make this a wonderful and fun event.
