Video Games for Seniors

Videos Games as Activites

Seniors are more active now than in past generations.  So incorporating fun activities that might not have been seen at a Nursing Home activities are becoming more commonplace.  One of these activities is Video Games.  Plenty of parents and grandparents have seen their younger family members dive right into video gaming.

Video Games are not just for your grandchildren anymore. Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has some video gaming equipment for residents like a Nintendo Wii.  The residents seem to really like the fun nature of gaming and who wouldn’t with these cute little guys?

Wii Bowling just fun for everyone even just watching.

Nursing Homes Therapy Dogs

Using Therapy Dogs at Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

If you’ve ever owned a pet like a dog or a cat, then you know the joy that they can bring you as a pet owner.  However, as our friends and family members age they might not be able to care for a pet as they once did.  But that does not stop a pet lover from smiling when they see a puppy or love patting a pooch on their head.  The use of pets in a care facility like a nursing home can add smiles, joy, to the days of the residents.  That’s where special dogs like Snickers who is a Therapy Dog can be helpful to make the residents day a little brighter.

Therapy Dogs are used to visit schools daycares, group homes and rehabilitation homes like Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  These dogs have stable friendly temperaments and easy-going personalities.  Patients are encouraged to talk, pet and interact with dogs which helps reduce stress and encourage healing.

Snickers is one of our therapy dogs that started coming to visit when he was a “Puppy”.  He came to visit last week while we had the residents on the porch enjoying popsicles.  And of course, he had to have some too.  Snickers also can do a lot of tricks with the help of his Mommy.  Visit again soon Snickers.

Silent Auction

Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center held a Chinese Auction for the residents on Friday, May 18th. Residents were given an envelope of tickets to go around and put them into items they wanted a chance at winning. Staff assisted those who needed it. At 2:30, staff started picking the winning numbers for each item. A lot of our residents came and lined the outer shell of the Grande Room to see if they were lucky to win an item. Everyone at least won one item that participated. Some won a couple of items.

Thanks for following us with our Nursing Home Week fun this past week. Check back for our next “Big” event…the return of our annual “Chopped” competition. See last year’s Chopped Competition.

Mix & Match Day

Special Event

Mahoning Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation CenterMVNRC” had a special event.  Tuesday was Mix n Matchday, the staff definitely hit this one good.  Never heard of Mix & Matchday?  Well, it’s a day that often celebrated a lot in elementary schools where children wear clothes and shoes that don’t match.  The key to this is to make it fun and try to be original.  So everyone at MVNRC took the idea and made it fun for all the residents to enjoy along with the staff.

The staff was walking around in “mix & match” clothing, residents enjoyed a Cake Walk with lots of goodies from The Dietary Department. We had a full circle plus waiting for their chance at a treat. Everyone won!

Come back to see what else we have in store for the rest of the week.

So who did it best??

See Who Gets Chopped!

Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center had its 2nd Annual Chopped Competition that took place on Wednesday, September 20th, 2017.

The competition is a truly exciting and fun competition where contestants, staff members, compete in a three-round contest. The contestants attempt to incorporate unusual combinations of ingredients into dishes that are later evaluated by a panel of judges. (Sounds exciting right?)

At the beginning of each round (Appetizer, entrée, and dessert), the contestants are each given a basket containing mystery ingredients and are expected to use all of them in some way. The ingredients are often not commonly prepared together. (Let your imagination run wild with you there.) The contestants are given access to a pantry and cooler stocked with a variety of other ingredients utensils to make their masterpieces. Let the fun and food begin.

Did we mention each round has a time limit? (tick, tock, time counts) The time limit may vary from 20 to 30 mins per round. (Sounds like a TV cooking show, right?) The contestants must cook their dishes and complete the plates before the time runs out. (tick, tock,) Once the time has expired, the judges critique the dishes based on presentation, taste, and creativity and select one team to be “Chopped”– Eliminating them from the competition.

Sounds like the folks at Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation know how to have a good time, with some good food. The “Chopped” event is a fun example of how Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation. It provides exciting events to interact with residents in a game that makes memories and draws residents and staff closer. We hope to see you there next year. Take a look at some of the great pictures from the event. If anyone has any questions about the event or wants to take a tour of the facility, please stop by or call 570-386-5522 for more information.
