WINDOW WALKING

Mall Walking

There are many good reasons that mall walking is an extremely popular and pleasant pastime, especially among senior citizens. Mall walking builds camaraderie with like-minded individuals and facilitates opportunities to forge new friendships. Many malls open early for mall walkers, and although the shops are closed, some concession kiosks are often open. Walkers enjoy the flat, safe surface on which to amble, the proximity to restrooms, and the pleasure of a clean water fountain. The location is safe, and in bad weather, walkers can enjoy the glamour of window after window of tempting merchandise to buy, revel in the color of creative marketing, and soak in the “sunlight” effect provided by lots of good old electric lights.

P.S. Mall walking is free and convenient, and there is often a bus stop on-site or nearby.  It’s a great senior exercise.

Bingo Nights

Bingo Fun

Who doesn’t love yelling Bingo? Well, it’s easy to get into the action. Many communities and senior centers, including churches, offer regular Bingo nights. It’s a great opportunity to get together with other friends for an afternoon or evening out or as a way to meet new people. The Chamber of Commerce can usually help out with information on local Bingo locations, and there are sites online, such as “Bingo Locator,” that can offer other venues. You don’t have to leave home to have Bingo fun, though. You can host a party yourself and have friends of different age groups participate. Joke gifts are readily available and make great, inexpensive prizes and everyone can bring snacks.

P.S. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, community and senior centers usually welcome help with Bingo nights to give the regular callers a chance to play

Browsing a bookstore is a fun activity, especially on very hot or cold days. A good way to remember the books you want to read is to take a picture of the cover with your phone. You can give potential future reads a once over while sitting in one of the comfortable chairs that many bookstores place throughout the store. You may even strike up a conversation with someone sitting close by who has read the book. Chatting with the bookstore owner or staff will keep you updated on future events such as guest author talks or readings. They can also answer any questions you may have as to when your favorite author’s next book is scheduled to come out.

P.S. Bookstores frequently have excellent magazine racks, pretty card choices, puzzles, and other book-related items for sale.

Golf is a wonderful sport

The Average Golfer Walks Four Miles

Golf is a wonderful sport, and literally, millions of senior citizens enjoy and benefit from it. The advantages range from the physical improvements it can make in one’s life to the social aspects of playing with like-minded people. The average golfer walks four miles on an eighteen-hole course. In addition, golfers use a variety of muscles as they negotiate the diverse terrain. The golf swing alone promotes core muscle strength in important regions of the body. Socially, golfers benefit from interaction and competition with a diverse group of people, and it certainly provides a reason to get up early and enjoy the day. Lastly, it creates recurring events to look forward to.

P.S. Golf enables players to use a high level of strategic thinking, which helps keep their brains fit and active.

PICK UP A BRUSH!

Even if you have never picked up a paintbrush in your life, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy painting and even be great at it. Painting is subjective. Some people love Picasso while others like Michelangelo. Beauty is different for everyone. A skilled art teacher will soon have you understanding that it is all good and it is about the pleasure of doing it. Your mind relaxes as you set up your easel and take out your paints. The teacher explains what he or she is hoping you will get out of the class and how you are going to go about it. Then the magic happens, and the creative side of your brain takes over.

P.S. A painting class will inspire you to look at the colors and shapes of your surroundings with more attention and see the beauty in unexpected places.
