Honoring Our Veterans at MVNRC

Honoring Our Veterans at MVNRC

On November 10th, 2023, our Veterans were honored and saluted at our Veterans Day Program led by Marine, Nick Hawkey. Nick has been leading our Veterans Day Program for the past 20 years. After some welcoming words by CM, Nancy S, of the Activities Department, to our residents, family members, staff, and veterans, Nick led us in reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag”. Nancy directed us in singing the “National Anthem”. She also shared interesting facts about the history of Veterans Day. Nick conversed about some of his personal experiences while serving in the Marine Corp.

We joined Nancy in singing “America the Beautiful”, which was then followed by Nick reading the poem, “In Flanders Field” by John McCrae.  At this time Nick presented a Certificate of Appreciation and a Flag Pin, to the Veterans who were sitting at the front of the room, with a salute, a hand shake, and encouraging and appreciative words. This year, the certificates and pins were graciously provided by Compassus.

Each person, in attendance, was called upon to announce their family members who also served in the military, so they could be remembered and honored as well. Emotions ran high throughout the program including pride, happiness, sadness, and some tears.  We agreed that we are all proud to be Americans and so thankful for those who served to keep us free.

After Nancy closed the program with a prayer, we sang “God Bless America”.  The Veterans were escorted by activity staff from the Grande Room, one at a time, as they received cheers and applause for their service by those in attendance.

Cruisin’ for Smiles: Car Enthusiasts and Residents Unite for Epic Event

“There couldn’t have been a more fabulous day for The Juke Box Cruisers Car Show, held on the grounds of the Mahoning Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on August 12th. The photos tell the story of the young and young at heart, as residents, families, staff, and volunteers, along with members of the Juke Box Cruisers Car Club, shared in laughter, conversations, and camaraderie during this successful event. Residents and their escorts viewed the 51 unique and interesting vehicles that entered the show. The residents voted for their favorite vehicle, and trophies were handed out to the top winners. There was also a DJ who played uplifting music, food, and drinks available at the Food Stand, and door prizes for lucky winners. Members of the car club shared stories and proudly answered questions about their vehicles the residents. As shown in a photo, Channel 13 had a reporter/cameraman at this exciting and unforgettable event.”

Indoor Snowball Fight

What can you do indoors during the holidays, when it’s cold and wet outside?

We have an idea for you how about a Snow Ball Fight?  That’s right you heard me a snowball fight.

But it’s cold, and wet outside, and though it might sound fun getting hit with a hard cold chunk of ice and snow might not be that much fun for everyone.  We changed it up a little so everyone can enjoy one.  No boots, gloves, or even snow was needed for this fun game the Activities Department organized.

On the day of an impending big snow storm why not have an indoor snowball fight with the staff to help spread some fun and smiles around the facility.  A loving staff member donated these fake snowballs a few years back to the Activities department. They are a soft material that is washable.  Residents and staff alike enjoy throwing them at each other.

Everyone was safe and no snow was used to make this an extra fun event check out the videos.
